Harry Farrar performed the Scottish Bagpipes for a fallen soldier at National Cemetery in Westwood, CA.
The honor guard and the gun salute was very impressive. The cemetery is an impressive place to visit. And, nicely kept. The cemetery is basically full with thousands of graves. Notably, graves of heros. Apparently, this cemetery in Los Angeles, has two British soldiers interned. In fact, this is the only National cemetery with this case. Not clear if Bagpipes were present at the services.
The Los Angeles National Cemetery opened as one of 11 facilities operated by the Veterans Administration. This was on lands shared with national veterans’s homes or asylums for disabled soldiers. Also, The Pacific Branch of the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers was established in 1887. And, on Santa Monica ranch lands donated by Senator John P. Jones and Arcadia B. de Baker. Interestingly, the following year, the site grew by an additional 200 acres. Following, in 1890, 20 more acres – as a veterans’ cemetery. By this time, with more than 1,000 veterans in residence, a new hospital was erected in 1900. It was replaced in 1927 by Wadsworth Hospital. Indeed, as second facility, Brentwood Hospital, was constructed in the 1920. Thirty miles north, another cemetery grew with military fallen soldiers. And, this was in Canyon Country.

Harry, as bagpipe musician performed a few times at Arvin or Bakersfield National Cemetery. A very nice place to quietly pay respects. The bagpipe means a lot to the families. Sometimes, drums are requested. Also Forest Lawn has a yearly Memorial Day ceremony at all Southern California properties. Westwood is closest to SP&D Headquarters.

Always, a service at Los Angeles National Cemetery is dignified. And, total attention is paid to tradition and fallen soldiers. Indeed, most people learn about this on the day of the service. Interestingly, the staff at LA national are mostly veterans. However, National Cementery Bagpiper, Harry Farrar, is just a professional musician. And, is honored to be part of these services.
In fact, the original chapel at Los Angeles National Cemetery was built between 1939 and 1940. Amazingly, during the World War Two time frame. Indeed, the chapel was renamed on May 29, 2002. Now, Bob Hope Veteran’s Chapel. And, National Cemetery Bagpiper for special services many times, is Harry Farrar. Often, services are held in the mid day.
